The mighty Arkle, a bay gelding by Archive out of Bright Cherry, was the highest ever rated steeplechaser by Timeform at 212, with only Flyingbolt anywhere near Arkle on a rating of 210. Arkle, bred at Ballymacoll Stud, County Meath by Mrs Mary Alison Baker, was owned by Anne, Duchess of Westminster, trained by Tom Dreaper and invariably ridden by Pat Taaffe. Although he went on to win 3 Cheltenham Gold Cups, he began in lowly company at Mullingar Racecourse on Saturday 9th December 1961 in the Lough Ennell Maiden Plate, a National Hunt Flat race, finishing third at 5/1, a length and 8 lengths behind Lady Flame (4/1 jt fav) and Kilspindle (9/2). After contesting another National Hunt Flat race, he then went to Navan on 20th January 1962 where he won the Bective Novice Hurdle over 3 miles, returning to a Mullingar card on Saturday 10th March when the meeting, although billed as Mullingar, actually took place on Naas racecourse, Arkle winning by 4 lengths as 2/1 favourite. Thirty-one races later Arkle retired having won 25 of those races, including the 3 Gold Cups (1964-66), 2 Hennessy Gold Cups (1964 & 1965) and a King George VI Chase (1965) at Kempton. |
